I've also been doing this type of thing for some time now. I like the term that you've coined for it. Since my fiancee works in Chicago around the Sears Tower, I generally just follow her downtown and frequent the numerous Starbucks around her location. I've since signed up for AT&T Wifi Premium subscription so I can get Wifi at any Starbucks.

I usually order 2 tall coffees per day, so I factor in a $6 premium for every day I do the nomad thing. That's not too bad for the chance to be out in the open with other people.

Sounds like you should investigate coworking. From what I’ve read (none close to me), a coworking location would be exactly what he’s looking for.

[...] June 14th, 2008 (8:00am) Mike Gunderloy 2 Comments Freelance developer Matthew Bass has put up a great new blog entry summarizing his experiences with nomadic programming: Recently, I’ve started doing what I’ve termed “nomadic programming.” Namely, spending the day roaming between various wi-fi hotspots instead of working from home. This has worked really well for me. So well, in fact, that I think the concept needs to start spreading. [...]

I've always thought that, if I ever get into doing freelance work, it would be nice to go in together with some like-minded freelancing or work-at-home friends and rent a small office close to home. Even if none of our work was directly related, the opportunity for camaraderie combined with the focus provided by not always working at home would be helpful, I think.
